What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Does the thought of entering a dental office fill you with fear? Do you feel nervous or anxious leading up to or during dental procedures? Ask Dr. Matt Pierce or Dr. Jim Heck about sedation dentistry in Greenwood, Indiana. Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to help patients with dental fears relax during dental treatments.
Levels of Sedation
In our office, we use minimal and moderate levels of sedation. With minimal sedation, a patient is awake but relaxed and comfortable. A patient under moderate sedation may slur when they speak and may not remember much of the dental procedure.
Types of Sedation
We provide our patients with nitrous oxide and oral sedation. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask that is placed over the nose. The gas, which produces minimal sedation, will help you relax. Our dentists will control the amount of sedation you receive. With this type of sedation, you will be able to drive yourself home after the procedure. With oral sedation, our dentists will provide you with an oral sedative, usually in the form of a pill, which you will take about an hour before the procedure. This will make you drowsy and relaxed. Oral sedation produces minimal or moderate sedation, depending on the dosage given.
